Mass General Home

From the Director

Christmas 2007

Dear Friend of the Durant Fellowship,

The year ends for the Durant Fellowship with much to be thankful for:

Our two 2006 fellows, Lucy Langenkamp and Chanda Plong, returned safely to Boston from their work in Rwanda and Cambodia. Visit their blogs at: http://chanda-durantfellowship.blogspot.com (Chanda) and http://www.rwandahealthjournal.blogspot.com (Lucy).

We have selected three new fellows for 2007, all nurses, who are in the process of selecting their country placements. Heather Szymczak did a short project in Bolivia (excerpt enclosed), and is hoping to return to South America for the rest of her fellowship. Betsy Baumgartner leaves for Zambia in January to work with the MGH Center for Global Health’s Maternal and Infant Health Initiative. Jen Brock is investigating opportunities in South Africa.

Six of our Mass General nurses, Annette James, Jane Kimbrough, Sara Mahoney, Mary O’Brien, Joy Williams, and Kristen Wilson, served as Durant Interns aboard the USNS COMFORT and USNS PELELIU for humanitarian missions to Latin America and Southeast Asia. Please see the enclosed excerpts from their experiences.

The monthly Durant Seminars have been a great success. These seminars are open to you and all interested parties, and focus on topics of interest in refugee and humanitarian relief work. Let us know if you would like to be on the email list for these talks.

Bill Reilly continues to host a very successful annual fundraiser golf tournament at Oyster Harbors.

We have started work on a campaign to endow the Durant Fellowship. The goal is to raise $2 million by 2009. More on this in a later mailing.

As always, we are grateful for your interest and support, and wish you and your family a joyful Christmas and holiday season. May your New Year be filled with happiness.

Our best regards,

Dr. Larry Ronan, Director

Dr. Donna Perry, Associate Director
